New Seekers: Danny Finn

Facebook logo. Pinterest logo. Twitter logo.

Although he will be most familiar to British record buyers for the six singles and two albums he recorded with the New Seekers, the bulk of Danny Finn's recordings were in fact made with Wishful Thinking, a group that became big in Germany but whose name proved to be prophetic in terms of its UK chart career.

In the sleeve notes to Under The Silent Tree, David Wells described this album as "a collection of so-so harmony beat / pop cover versions of material initially cut by The Four Seasons, The Beach Boys et al."

Hiroshima
(B&C Records LP CAS 1038) 6th August 1971
(Midi Star-Collection MID 20 105) 1976
(Prog Temple CD PTCD8003) 6th November 2012

Hiroshima was produced by Lou Reizner, who had produced Rod Stewart's first two albums, An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down and Gasoline Alley.

According to Mojo magazine, Reizner "not only shaped... Hiroshima but provided the voiceover on the title track, repeating the words of the actual broadcast that reported the first atomic bomb attack in August 1945." (Mojo, No. 216, November 2011)

In 1972 Reizner produced an orchestral version of Pete Townshend's rock opera Tommy, recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra with the English Chamber Choir and host of stars including Madeline Bell, Ringo Starr, Rod Stewart and Steve Winwood. He went on to produce Rick Wakeman's Journey To The Centre Of The Earth (1974) and the soundtrack to the film All This And World War II (1976). He died in London of stomach cancer on 26th June 1977.

Reviewing the Hirsohima album in Record Mirror, Valerie Mabbs wrote: "Somewhat disappointing, this collection, better tracks being She Belongs To The Night and the more pop based Goodbye Lover, which has stronger lead vocal and a hint of past harmonies." (Record Mirror, 7th August 1971, page 7)

Side 1: Hiroshima | This Time Tomorrow | She Belongs To The Night | Mary Goodbye | Ever Since I Can Remember | We're Gonna Change All This
Side 2: Now | The United States of Europe 79 | I Wrote A Song | 1984 | Goodbye Lover

That'll Be The Day (film soundtrack)

Wishful Thinking appeared in the film That'll Be The Day, starring David Essex as Jim MacLaine. "What's the band like?" he asked. "Not bad" came the reply. The song that they performed (as the band the Debonaires) is the old Cliff Richard and the Shadows hit It'll Be Me. The song appears on Side 4 (Disc 2) of the soundtrack album. Wishful Thinking also provided the backing for five songs by Billy Fury, which also appear on Side 4 (Disc 2).

Side 4: David Essex, Rock On | Billy Fury, A Thousand Stars | Viv Stanshall, Real Leather Jacket | Billy Fury, Long Live Rock | Stormy Tempest, What In The World (Shoop) | Billy Fury, That's All Right Mama | Eugene Wallace, Slow Down | Billy Fury, Get Yourself Together | Billy Fury, What'd I Say | Wishful Thinking, It'll Be Me

Marty Paul and Danny

Singles

Coming Alive Again (Marty Kristian / Paul Layton / Danny Finn) /
Water Lady (Marty Kristian / Ritchie)
(RCA 2486) 21st March 1975

Marty, Paul and Danny's début single had been recorded on 20th September 1974 at the IBC recording studios in London but legal difficulties delayed its release for six months. When it finally came out, the single got a great review in Record Mirror.

"New (improved?) Seekers Marty and Paul with secret ingredient Danny Finn make their long-awaited début - and it's a good one. The song is written by the three of them and it's not as syrupy as you might expect, featuring some punchy harmonies, spirited drumming and strident acoustic. Should get the trio off to a flying start." (Record Mirror, 29th March 1975, page 30)

Take Me Back (Marty Kristian) /
Dinkey (Paul Layton)
(RCA 2607) 12th September 1975

"It's a very easy, singalong number with that sax / brass chorus line that used to appear so often in the New Seekers' days. Chorus is quite strong, but possibly not just strong enough to make it a big hit." (Record Mirror, 20th September 1975, page 23)

Sweet Melinda (Paul Layton / Marty Kristian / Danny Finn) /
Holiday (Marty Kristian / Glenn Wheatley)
(RCA 2630) 14th November 1975

The backing vocals on Holiday were provided by a then unknown 18-year-old singer called Kathy Ann Rae. Less than six months after the release of this single she would join Marty, Paul and Danny and Eve Graham as the newest member of the New Seekers.
